International Race Classification System
In January 2026, adventure racing countries accepted our proposal for a unified International Race Classification System that was created to addresse the current lack of consistency in race descriptions around the world. The system standardises technical definitions to create a clear pathway for new participants to enter the sport and progress, while allowing experienced athletes to easily identify race formats suited to their goals. Our core philosophy is that this system captures the parameters of a race. It does not dictate the content. Race organisers retain full creative freedom over course design, terrain, and branding. The system simplifies the sport into four distinct categories based on duration and discipline count: Discovery, Challenge, Endurance and Expedition events.
